Did you know we are an all-gender shelter?
When many people think of domestic violence, they picture a battered woman and her abusive husband. While this reality is important to address, gender-based violence impacts people of all genders, sexual orientations, and backgrounds.
Men comprise about 20% of all intimate partner violence cases reported to police in Canada and about 20% of intimate partner violence homicide victims (Burczycka and Conroy 2018; Conroy 2021). Men who experience abuse face the stigma that men should not be victimized. They may also face challenges when reaching out for help due to the social expectation that men are strong and self-sufficient.
Members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community may have difficulty getting help due to discrimination, homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. Their circumstances also make it more likely that they will experience abuse. Transgender people are almost twice as likely to report experiencing intimate partner violence. (Allen and Perreault, 2015).
Intimate partner violence can happen to anyone from any background. At Jessie’s House, We Hear You Too. We serve all individuals who need our help, regardless of age or gender. While most of our clients are women and children, we welcomed 21 men and their children in 2022 and 10 trans or nonbinary individuals since opening Jessie’s House.
We are here to help with educational programming, safety planning, and safe housing, all through a trauma-informed lens and client-centered approach.
