Have a Plan Before You Leave
You’re not alone.
Last year, 52,300 Albertans called shelters seeking support. (ACWS 2020-21)

GET AN EMERGENCY PROTECTION ORDER
File an Emergency Protection Order if you have been in a family violence situation and require police protection.
ESCAPING ABUSE BENEFIT
Emergency funding is available to individuals who are escaping family violence or domestic abuse. This fund provices $1000 plus half of the damage deposit.
SAFER PLACES CERTIFICATE
Tenants can end their tenancy agreement without financial penalty by getting a certificate confirming they’re victims of domestic violence.
PET SAFEKEEPING
The Pet Safekeeping Program is dedicated to helping victims of family violence leave abusive situations by providing temporary care for their pets.
EMERGENCY NEEDS ALLOWANCE
Financial assistance for unexpected emergencies is available through the Emergency Needs Allowance. This service could pay for hotel if shelters are full, or transportation to shelter or another safe space.
CLAIRE’S LAW
People at risk of domestic violence have the right to get information about potentially harmful intimate partners. If you suspect your partner/ex-partner is violent or they begin to be abusive, you can seek a background check. Family members are also able to use this service if they have concrete concerns.
