This week, the Alberta government released the long-awaited 10-Year Strategy to End Gender-Based Violence. This is a made-in-Alberta response to Canada’s National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, which launched in 2021. Overall, this strategy and comments from Arts, Culture, and Status of Women Minister Tanya Fir make it clear that gender-based violence is not just a women’s issue; it is up to all Albertans to come together to learn and create change.
The strategy outlines 5 priorities, which are:
- Increase awareness of gender-based violence
- Prevent gender-based violence before it happens
- Support Indigenous-led solutions
- Empower women to be economically independent
- Support survivors and all those impacted where and when they need it
The Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation (JMMF) has already been engaged in this work, including the recent expansion of the Inspire Program to include a boys’ cohort. We are also proud that we were invited to give our feedback as part of the government’s stakeholder sessions in development of this report.
This strategy will help guide us in our work as we continue to grow in the coming years and achieve our vision of a future free of domestic violence for all individuals.
